San Francisco-based A16 promises "California Italian" cuisine, with a specialty in Neapolitan-style pizzas. California and Italy are both well represented on the wine list, which offers a good selection of wines by the glass or carafe as well as by the bottle.

The kitchen turns out ten varieties of pizza, generously topped with high-quality ingredients. You'll mainly find popular Neapolitan standards like Marinara, Margherita, Romana and Prosciutto. The Formaggi features a luxurious blend of five cheeses - ricotta, mozzarella, scamorza affumicata, Gorgonzola and Grana Padano.

One variety not often seen in Tokyo is the Patate, topped with potato, prosciutto cotto, mozzarella, Grana Padano, oregano, arugula and garlic. Salsiccia (fennel sausage) is balanced by a mix of Grana Padano and mozzarella, with herbs, chili peppers, bits of roast garlic and pungent Kyoto green onions sparking things up.

Rather than coming pre-sliced, pizzas arrive with a big pair of scissors so you can cut your own. Crusts are easily foldable, and are tasty in their own right.

If you're in the mood for more than just pizza you can choose from several starters (Chicken Terrine; Carpaccio) and a handful of mains (Roasted Red Snapper; Pork Meatballs). Fancy pastas (Squid Ink Tonnarelli with Squid Ragu Sauce; Spaccatelle with Broccoli, Walnut, Anchovy and Lemon) come in full and half sizes.

The dining room looks out onto the very attractive Marunouchi Brick Square complex, and it's a lively setting - the room is hopping even late into weekday lunch hour. Outdoor seating is available on the wrap-around terrace when the weather is bearable.

Lunchtime set menus (Y2,500 to Y3,200) feature either pasta, pizza or meatballs, and include salad, dessert and a drink. Alternatively you can order pizza a la carte - prices range from Y1,700 (Marinara) to Y2.900 (Salsiccia). Budget around Y4,000-6,000 at dinnertime. Most wines are Y6,000-12,000 per bottle, with glasses starting at Y1,000.
