Shalara
Gion: Beer bar
Shalara
Open noon-9:30pm (LO). Closed Mondays, Tuesdays.
Sun: Open Sundays

If you're wandering around Kyoto's Gion district near Yasaka Shrine and find yourself in need of a cold drink, this cozy brewpub offers craft beers and ciders for here or to go, and even has a take-out window facing the street for quick outdoor service. Beers are Y850 and Y1,000 for small and medium-size glasses.

Beers are all from a microbrewery in Tokyo's Setagaya-ku called Riot Beer, and there are usually seven or more varieties on tap, along with three ciders. Four-part tasting flights (140ml pours) are priced at Y1,500.

The full name of this establishment is Shalara Craft Beer and Nuts, and the extensive nut menu features nine types of roasted, unsalted nuts. Prices range from 6 yen (almonds, cashews) to 12 yen (Brazil nuts) per gram, and there are pre-made nut assortments as well as dried fruit mixes. It's cash on delivery, there's no table charge, and the bar has a standing area as well as seats.
