This small restau-
rant and wine bar
serves sophisticat-
ed, modern Hungarian
fare - richly and
distinctively fla-
vored but not overly
heavy. The dining
room is clean and
elegant but under-
stated, so it never
feels too formal or
uncomfortable. Ser-
vice is attentive
and professional.
Some typical main
meat dishes are
roast venison and
foie gras with fruit
sauce; pigeon pie;
roast duck with
white beans and
poached egg; roast
pork with potatoes
and cheese; and veal
stew with foie gras
(foie gras is very
popular here).
Everything comes in
single and double-
size portions,
should you want to
share.
There's also good
fish - a delicate
roast trout with
almonds, and an
excellent fried
seabass served with
ratatouille-style
vegetables. A couple
of tasty goulash
variations make good
starters, and the
cold-cherry soup is
a summertime favor-
ite. An assortment
of Hungarian pas-
tries and crepes
will finish things
off.
While a la carte
dishes can be a bit
pricey (Y1800-3500
for single-portion
mains), there are
also more economical
set menus at Y5,000,
8,000 and 10,000.
Lunches are Y1000,
Y1980 and Y3500, and
the multi-course
options include many
of the same dishes
that are served at
dinnertime. The
extensive Hungarian
wine list includes
many bottles for
under Y5000, but
also a handful in
the Y20,000 range
and even a few vin-
tage Tokaj wines for
over Y100,000.
