The unusual menu of
"Balinese fusion
cuisine" and the
offbeat decor -
showcasing huge,
colorfully stocked
aquariums - make
this a fun late-
night destination
for thrill-seeking
Tokyo diners.

Balinese fusion
would seem to be
virgin territory for
an enterprising
chef, and the con-
cept is credibly
addressed in dishes
like the nam-pla-
infused Oriental
Caesar salad with
soft-boiled egg, and
the enticing white
sesame tiramisu.
Dishes at the more
conventional end of
the spectrum are
also quite good; we
especially enjoyed
the grilled chicken
breast with peanut
sauce, and we got a
pleasantly spicy
charge out of the
hot noodles with
ground shrimp and
leek powder.

For the adventurous
there are unusual
seafood choices like
lobster and grape-
fruit salad with
mullet roe; red
snapper and jelly-
fish carpaccio; and
fried fish balls,
along with more
standard fish and
seafood stir-fries
and stews. Even
though the menu is
aimed at a different
audience from that
of the typical
ethnic-style restau-
rant, the chefs
don't shy away from
hot spices as one
might expect.

For drinks you can
choose from a big
cocktail menu, short
lists of European
wines and Asian
beers, plus some
unfamiliar beverages
like lotus tea to
wind up your meal.
Service is friendly
and efficient, and
although the interi-
or is relatively
large, tables are
spread out among
several different
cozy seating areas
for more intimacy.
There's also a rent-
able "VIP room" for
private parties of
4-6 that features a
close-up view of the
largest and pretti-
est of the tropical
fish on display. (A
budget of Y2500 per
person should cover
food and non-VIP
table charge, with-
out drinks.)

We'll go out on a
limb and say that
this might well be
the best spot in
Tokyo for entertain-
ing any visiting
Indonesian insomniac
ichthyologists of
your acquaintance.
And it's a fun stop-
over for the rest of
us as well.
