Yuuan/
Ebisu: Tofu

€Data
The modern decor
here is very taste-
ful, but the dining
room is a bit on the
sterile side - it's
hard to forget that
you're eating in a
shopping mall (spe-
cifically the Atre
mall above JR Ebisu
station). The intri-
guing food menu
makes up for it
though, with a wide
range of nicely done
traditional items
like ganmodoki
(fried tofu with
bits of vegetables)
and more untradi-
tional creations
like carrot and
lotus-root tsukune
(chicken meatballs),
organic salads and
soy-milk soup.

The menu isn't lim-
ited to tofu items,
either - besides
very good sashimi in
season, you'll also
find dishes like
pot-au-feu-style
kakuni (pork stew)
and pan-fried macke-
rel. There's a de-
cent sake list and a
wide range of set
meals - 7 different
lunch sets alone -
with dinners start-
ing at around Y2400.

Yuuan has another
tofu specialty res-
taurant in Ginza
(03-5537-6065), and
three upscale and
tofu-inclusive "sea-
sonal cuisine" res-
taurants in Ginza,
Shinagawa and Nishi-
Shinjuku. And
there's a casual
deli-style Yuuan in
the JR Meguro Atre.
