Zetton/
Ebisu: Japanese

We had almost given
up on trying Zetton
anytime soon - it's
been impossible to
get a same-day res-
ervation at this
popular new izakaya/
cafe, the first
Tokyo venture of a
Nagoya-based group.
But we wandered by
at 9pm on a recent
weeknight and were
rewarded with a
table immediately. A
comfortable, cozy
little table, in
fact, nestled into
one of the many
nooks and crannies
that make up the
interior space here.
This is the kind of
place you might find
worth cultivating if
you happen to fre-
quent Ebisu in the
late evening. The
staff is friendly,
the late-night hours
are accommodating,
the music and decor
are hip, and even
the ceramic dishes
and bowls are quite
pretty. And although
it's more of a
drinking spot with
entertaining food
than a full-fledged
serious restaurant,
the menu is still
worth exploring.
There are the usual
permutations of
izakaya standbys,
plus a big miso
section (it's a
Nagoya thing), and
quite a few Korean-
influenced items. We
enjoyed a crisp-
skinned grilled
chicken balanced by
sweet Masuzuka miso
(Y980) and the teba-
saki cola-ni (Y760)
- chicken wings
stewed in cola and
Chinese spices until
the meat is soft
enough to fall off
the bone. One enter-
taining item was the
miso-yaki - the
waitress brought a
big, hot rock to our
table, and we
brushed the top of
it with miso paste
flavored with dried
shrimp and nuts,
then scraped it off
when done and ate it
on Indonesian shrimp
crackers.
The drinks menu is
huge, offering the
thirsty customer:
beer; sake; koshu
("old" sake); sho-
chu; Okinawan awamo-
ri; Chinese and
Korean liqueurs, and
cocktails made from
same; Korean, Chi-
nese and Japanese
teas (including corn
eat and flower tea);
cappucino and es-
presso; frozen cock-
tails; whisky cock-
tails; and a select,
medium-sized wine
list.
