Kina/
Omotesando: Izakaya
3400-2244
Data
Hip, stylish izakaya
with affordable
prices are always
good to know about,
especially in a
neighborhood as
upscale as Aoyama.
Open till 4am, Kina
is also noteworthy
as one of the few
late-night outposts
in the immediate
area (tucked away on
a side street next
to Aoyama Gakuin).
But the high quality
of Kina's food and
drink makes it worth
a visit any time of
the evening.

The decor here is
tasteful and modern,
with stone surfaces
and dark wood adding
an element of solid-
ity. The ground
floor has a big open
kitchen and a long
counter, with just a
few tables at the
front. Upstairs is
more intimate, with
latticework divid-
ers, comfortable
nooks for tables,
and a spacious coun-
ter around the bar
area anchored by a
huge ikebana ar-
rangement. There are
also several lovely
rooms on the third
floor that will give
your party more
privacy, with the
private-room sur-
charge starting at
just Y5000 (for 4-6
people).

Kina's menu is orga-
nized around
charcoal-grilled
specialties, includ-
ing free-range
chicken, Kagoshima-
bred pork, and Japa-
nese domestic beef.
The grilled chicken
with negi (Y700) is
a good standby,
perhaps accompanied
by garlic-sauteed
kinoko (mushrooms)
or grilled eggplant
with miso and ground
chicken (Y900).
There's a selection
of hibachi-grilled
items to be cooked
at your table, in-
cluding some intri-
guing lotus-root
cakes (Y800). Sake
drinkers can find an
excellent selection
of a dozen sakes of
all stripes, plus a
few seasonal picks
each month. The bar
area is lined with
whiskey bottles,
which at first mis-
led us into thinking
that this was a much
more expensive es-
tablishment. But
Kina is at heart a
sake pub, and the
staff know their
selection. A dinner-
sized order of food
and drinks should
run around Y3000-
5000 per person.
