Data
"Charcoal grilled
original cuisine" is
the concept at Kuu,
but somehow that
description fails to
capture the excep-
tionally high qual-
ity of the food
here. Many of the
dishes are disarm-
ingly simple (a
smoky-flavored
grilled eggplant
with bits of okra;
grilled chicken
topped with finely
minced spring on-
ions) but they stand
out because of their
top-grade ingre-
dients - flavorful
free-range chickens,
picture-perfect
organic vegetables,
and the finest from
Tsukiji fish market.
Garlic and other
seasonings are used
freely and intelli-
gently - in the
sublime garlic-miso
grilled buri (yel-
lowtail), with its
perfectly crispy
skin, and the eye-
opening shiso garlic
rice (Y480) with
garlic chips and
tiny threads of red
pepper. One inter-
esting discovery was
the renkon tsukune -
similar to Chinese
turnip cakes but
made with ground
lotus root and
grilled on a tiny
portable hibachi at
your table.
There's a nice se-
lection of 12 sake
varieties to comple-
ment the food (Y700-
800 per glass), or
beer or wine if
you're so inclined.
The Japanese-style
decor is charmingly
modern without being
pushy, laid out
around a large open
grill area and ar-
ranged to take full
advantage of the
50th-floor nighttime
view of the city.
Somehow Kuu has
captured the warm,
casual atmosphere of
a traditional grill
while still being
thoroughly modern
and urban.
If this is the 21st-
century version of
the traditional
robatayaki grill,
then we've come a
long way from the
farmhouse.
