Our Special Ale
Anchor Brewing
Company
San Francisco,
U.S.A.
Among U.S.
microbreweries,
Anchor has the
longest history,
the original
Steam Beer
brewery being
rescued from
oblivion by
Fritz Maytag in
1968. Naturally,
among U.S.
microbrewers,
they have the
longest history
making a
Christmas ale,
Our Special Ale,
which is put on
sale each
November. Each
year the recipe
varies; some
years the spices
are pungent and
sharp, other
years they are
mellow and
sweet. What I
recommend is to
allow the beer
to age in your
refrigerator for
at least a full
year; by then
the spices have
had a change to
mellow and meld
nicely with the
dark malts used
in this beer.
This year's
version features
heady notes of
nutmeg, with a
spicy
gingerbread
character
overall. Deep
reddish brown,
with an ivory
head and a
holiday aroma of
sweet baking
spices.
Definitely a
once-yearly
treat. At
National Azabu
Supermarket in
Hiroo, Tokyo.
Regular bottles
are 380 yen, and
a 50 ounce
magnum bottle is
about 2,000 yen.
