Gotenba Kogen
Kurogome Beer
Shizuoka Pref.

"Kurogome" means
"black rice," a
variety produced
centuries ago,
but now rarely
seen. In recent
years it has
been used in a
few rare types
of sake, and now
there is a beer
made with it.
Fortunately, it
is very well
made, with
superb clarity
and no off
flavors. It is
light amber with
a slight pink-
gray hue and a
thin white head,
and aromas of
dried fruit and
straw. It has a
beautiful spicy
complexity
similar to beers
made with rye
malt, backed by
a complex fruity
flavor with
strong mineral
notes. The body
is light, and
the sweetness
quickly fades,
although the
bitterness
lingers for a
long time. 450
yen per glass
(100 yen between
4 and 6 p.m.) at
Beer Chimney in
Ikebukuro.
