Asahi Honnama
Low-malt beer
Light yellow,
very clear, with
a dense white
head. Strangely
amplified sugary
malt flavors
from a very thin
body, with hop
bitterness
coming to the
fore right away.
A strong sugary
flavor emerges
in mid-palate,
and lingers
surprisingly
long before
gradually
tailing off.
While the taste
is relatively
full, there is a
strongly
artificial
character, much
like that with
diet soft
drinks. 5.5%
alcohol.
Contains 25%
malt, hops,
barley extract,
starch, and
sugars. While
other major
Japanese brewers
have been
selling low-malt
beer for years,
this is Asahi's
first. Last
year, sales of
low-malt beer
finally exceeded
20% of the
market, so
Asahi's entry is
no surprise.
Low-malt beer, a
type of
happoshu, is
taxed less than
regular beer,
and is priced
35% less.
